Kidney and DKD Pathophysiology - Video

This video resource explores the function of the kidneys and visualizes the changes in structure and physiological regulatory mechanisms in diabetic kidney disease (DKD).

What you'll learn:

  • How the kidneys autoregulate to ensure a regular intraglomerular pressure
  • The two main regulatory mechanisms that control intraglomerular pressure
  • The effect of diabetes on the glomerulus, including an increase in the reabsorption of glucose and sodium
  • What happens in the kidneys when the body enters a condition of hyperglycemia, including:
    • Failure of the physiological regulation of intraglomerular pressure through the tubulo-glomerular feedback (TGF) mechanism
    • Rising intraglomerular pressure following the failure of the TGF mechanism
  • How the failure of the TGF mechanism, along with an increase in intraglomerular pressure, can contribute to the development of diabetic nephropathy
